Approval, Redemption and Forgiveness in The Kite Runner by...

Jesus sacrificed his own life for everyone’s sins in order for redemption, allowing his followers to gain forgiveness. In the novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, Amir understood that he must risk his own life in order to free him and his father from their sins. Amir desired rebirth of a new life, but he was unsure of how to live a life free of sin. In relation to the poem, Redemption, by James Casey, Amir was also running and hiding from his problems. Escaping to California with his father did not give Amir the refreshing start he had hoped for. Desires of Amir included: redemption for wronging Hassan, the approval of his father, and for overall acceptance and forgiveness. Baba’s wife had died during Amir’s birth, which makes Amir feel guilty. Throughout his childhood, Amir felt like he was responsible for his mother’s death, thinking was why his father did not love him. Determined for restoration, Amir wins a kite running tournament, making his father proud of him. Growing up, Baba always said that Amir would never stand up for himself and be a true man. When older, Baba had grown sick of cancer and Amir looked after him. Despite the inability to prove his manhood, Amir’s father died proud of him. This, of course, was not good enough for Amir to live satisfied. Later on, Amir had learned that Baba had wronged Ali. Both Baba and Amir had betrayed their faithful and loyal friends, and it was only right for Amir to atone for them. Rescuing Sohrab would prove to Amir that he is in fact the man his father wanted him to be. Also, Amir knew that his father would be proud to know his son fought for what was right with Sohrab’s situation. Although the guilt Amir feels about Hassan will never fully dissipate, he was given a chance of redemption. The war in Kabul and Amir relate in the fact that things were not like how they used to be, a lingering somber and void sensation. Comparison of Mother Figures in Medea and Mother Courage Essay Bertolt Brechts Mother Courage and Emile Zolas Therese Raquin are both works with characters that possess maternal instinct. There is not a definite explanation for maternal instinct because it can be viewed differently. Although this is true, there is often a stereotype woman with the right qualities of maternal instinct. This often articulates unrealistic images in peoples minds. Instinct means an imposed set of values, imposed by the society and the way they think a mother should naturally act by. Realistically, the instinct depends on the mothers disposition, the way she wants to behave depends on her emotions, which cannot be articulated. Therefore, it is not possible to impose a definite set of values for how a mother should act for it varies from one mother to another. Mother Courage is a mother who fights for a living so that her three children can survive the war. War to her is a necessity because she needs the business from the soldiers in order to survive, but on the other hand, war is her ultimate enemy. She is doing everything to keep her and her children from being involved with the war. It was her husbands death that lead to her natural defenses for her children and the war which in turn resulted in expressing her strong maternal instinct. Also, Mother Courage is forced to make decisions and puts a lot of effort into trying to stay with her children. For example, when the Cook proposes to Mother Courage, Kattrin realizes that the Cook thinks she is a burden and does not like her. Therefore, she decides to leave, but Mother Courage chooses to leave the Cook and follow Kattrin instead. Here, Mother Courage has sacrificed her potential welfare in order to protect her only child left. Well go off in tother direction, and well throw cooks stuff out so he finds it, silly man. But just by looking at this protection towards her children, one cannot readily Assume that she is a good mother. Through various sacrifices made by her children, Brecht portrayed traits of human selfishness. For example, when the Recruiter took her bravest son, Eilif away: Got your bounty money here, come along. Eilif stands undecided. Half a florin it is. Mother Courage, who had always distasted war, loses her most valuable thing, her bravest son to war whilst bargaining the price of a best with the Sergeant. Here, Brecht uses situational irony as an example of how Mother Courage did not meet the criteria of a stereotyped maternal instinct. Brecht gave Mother Courage an unconventional response to losing her son, where she is very unsentimental when she realizes her son is lost. In a similar situation, when a loving mother realizes her son or daughter is missing, she is most likely to have a much more dramatic and concerned attitude when compared to Mother Courage. Despite the loss of her child, Mother Courage seems to have the opposite of this. She decides to go off with her car and her two other children to continue their livelihood; a sense of irony is present as well. The technique here is to use examples, again, to prove that Mother Courage may not be the caring mother she should be. Then loses her two other children because of her own self-interest in trying to protect her cart rather then her children. First she loses Swiss Cheese when she denies of knowing her son as she was asked and as a result, he is executed in agony. So in trade for her cart, she abuses Swiss Cheeses sovereignty. He used the narrow, dark, damp, dirty, evil and gloomy bridge to give an impression of the restrictions that Madame Raquin imposes on Camille. This emphasizes on how Madame Raquins way of protecting her son is ironic because of the impression of isolation from the society and the sense of suffocation of restrictions. The irony is, by not allowing freedom in Camilles life, Madame Raquin is indirectly leading him onto the road to no mans land. He believes that everything Madame Raquin is doing is for his good. The other impressionistic image is the absence of light in the gloomy bridge, hence it gives an impression that it is somewhere that is isolated, as if detached from the rest of the influential and egregious elements of society. Consequently here, Madame Raquin shapes Camilles character by preventing him from having an untamed heart which may kill him, ironically. Conclusively, the two mothers in these two novels both have their own characteristics and their own way of dealing with their children. But not everyone may acknowledge the ways they deal with their individual problems, some people may approve of it as being maternal love, and some others may disagree. Even the authors may not have wholly approved, they may have used intentionalist fallacy in order to portray the stereotyped mother. Either way, both authors chose to use situations where maternal love was either needed or lacked; as in Mother Courage, or was superfluous; as in Thrse Raquin, to reveal maternal instincts through different sections of the plot.

Cinderella’s case conceptualized through Bowen’s concepts of triangulation. According to Goldenberg and Goldenberg (2008), the Bowen’s concept of triangulation would allow understanding better Cinderella’s marital problems. Probably, a few first years of Cinderella’s marriage were happy, because it was a big relieve for her to escape the stepmother cruelty. However, even her first marital years could have some initial problems. For example, the prince, who was brought up in a â€Å"normal† family, could not understand or could not believe Cinderella’s stories she told about her family. He would smile when she would share her violent memories with him. The prince mistrust and his ironic smile could initiate some negative feelings and despair in Cinderella. In this case, the stepmother’s figure would be present in Cinderella-prince conflict through Cinderella’s stories. When there is a shortage or no oxygen, the heart will not be able to function normally. This is known as a heart attack or a coronary attack. (Anon, 2012) This happens when the coronary arteries which carry the oxygen to the heart become blocked. This blockage can be due to cholesterol, fat and other substances which are known collectively as plaque. Causing the arteries to become thick and hard. This is known as atherosclerosis. This does not cause any damage to the heart muscle whereas a heart attack does. An angina pectoris occurs normally during exercise or emotional pain causing the patients blood pressure to increase beyond normal. (Anon, 2012) Other causes of a heart attack can be a spasm in the coronary artery blocking the blood supply flow towards the heart muscle hindering the oxygen and vital supply of nutrients to the heart. The cause of the spasm is unknown and can occur in an ordinary artery or in one that has a blockage. If the spasm is severe this can lead to a heart attack. (Anon, 2012) Cardiac arrest is when there is an abnormal heart beat. This is slightly different to a heart attack because it is due to the hearts electrical system. Because only a few hospitals offer 24 hour percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures, clot-dissolving medication is used to reopen arteries that may be clogged. Such medication may not be used on patients with neurological disorders, pregnant patients, patients who have had major surgery or trauma in the past 6 weeks and patients who had been vomiting blood. (Amy and Elliot, 2006) Angioplasty Should a doctor decide that a patient needs an angioplasty, artery blockages will be observed on an angiogram (an x-ray of the hearts arteries) in a catheterization laboratory. A PCI is then performed by a cardiologist, in which the patient will remain awake throughout the whole procedure. During this procedure the skin is numbed, and a needle is inserted through the skin and a catheter and a soft-tipped guide wire are threaded into the aorta, and then into the heart using the needle. The catheter tip is passed through the arteries that transport the blood to the heart. Once the catheter is in place, a dye is injected into the heart vessels to make any blockages visible on x-ray. A tiny balloon on the tip of the catheter is inflated to unblock the artery. After the procedure, a stent is inserted where the blockage was. The stent is will remain permanently in the heart and may in some cases slowly release medication over time which prevents the growth of scar tissue and also prevents the formation of clots on that site. The recovery process may then take place in the coronary care unit which is an intensive care unit, where the patient will be monitored with ECGs, blood tests and routine checkups 24 hours a day. (Anon., 2012) Antiplatelet medication is prescribed to patients with newly inserted stents. This medication is important to prevent clotting in the stents. This medication must be taken by the patient for at least 12 months. If a patient stops taking the medication too soon it may result in a clot that may block the flow of blood through the stent resulting in another heart attack. Medication such as beta-blockers, aspirin and statin may also be prescribed by the cardiologist to prevent future heart attacks. In the event that non-surgical treatment is preferred by the doctor, medication can be administered to the patient. The medication is used to prevent future blood clots, break up existing clots, prevent platelets from gathering and sticking to the plaque, stabilize the plaque, and prevent any blood supply restrictions to tissues in the body. In order to decrease the damage that the heart muscle can undergo it is vital that the medication is administered within 30 minutes from when the heart attack symptoms occurred. (Anon., 2012) Medication used in heart attack treatment includes: aspirin thrombolytic therapy (clot busters) heparin other antiplatelet drugs Should a patient have more than 3 blocked arteries, coronary artery bypass surgery is usually recommended. There are different types of coronary artery bypass surgery. (Anon., 2012). These include:- Traditional coronary artery bypass surgery This is the most common type of bypass surgery and is performed when a bypass is needed on at least one major artery. During this procedure, the chest is opened; exposing the heart and medication is used to stop the heart until the end of the procedure. The heart is operated on whilst a heart-lung machine is used to pump blood around the body, not depleting the oxygen supply throughout the whole body. Electric shocks are used to start the heart again after the surgery. (Anon., 2012) Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery This type of surgery is also open heart surgery and is similar to the traditional coronary artery bypass surgery. The difference is that the heart is not stopped which reduces the recovery time and also reduces the number of complications that may occur during and after surgery.(Anon., 2012) Minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass surgery This type of surgery is similar to the off-pump bypass surgery, except it is not open heart surgery. This treatment is used in conjunction with anti-epileptic drugs. The vagus nerve stimulation does not act as a replacement for the drugs the patient is being administered, it works to aid the drugs thus achieving a better therapeutic response from the patient. Vagus nerve stimulation may also take up to two years to have an effect on a patients seizures, but if the treatment is effective, the patient may be allowed to decrease their anti-epileptic doses over time. The aim of vagus nerve stimulation is to reduce the number of seizures, the length of the seizures and the severity of the seizures in a patient.
